Building for “Future‑Proof” R&D Facilities
Perceptive Pixel
The client needed to create a new R&D/manufacturing facility that could keep up with the speed of change in the multi-touch interface market. Their manufacturing processes were expected to be updated every 90 days. We converted an old warehouse building into 100,000 SF flexible research, development, and production space for the next breakthrough in multi-touch interfaces.
At Perceptive Pixel, building a cutting-edge cleanroom within an existing warehouse was a key challenge. The existing building couldn’t support the weight of the cleanroom ceiling/plenum, so Hoffman got creative and built a steel structure within the warehouse. We excavated and poured footings for each column without compromising the integrity of the existing warehouse.
The cleanroom’s longest spans are 50 feet and it is 16 feet tall. To support the project’s high-powered manufacturing equipment (and future equipment), we installed a 200-amp transformer and brought Power Service B electrical service to the building, all within an extremely aggressive two-week timeframe.
