Renovating a Portland Arts Landmark
Guild Theater
Hoffman converted the former Guild Theater building into a shell space for future retail. Originally built in 1927 as a recital hall, it became the Guild Theater in 1956 but had been vacant since 2006. All the interior finishes that defined the building as a theater were demolished, including walls, ceilings, the stage, and a mezzanine floor. The team removed all of the sloped and raised slabs in the building and excavated down for a new slab that is entirely at street level to provide ADA compliance. In places, up to eight feet of earth was removed in lowering the slabs. Temporary bracing was designed to stabilize the building while new seismic structure was installed. The shell space conversion was part of a larger renovation of the adjoining building, which included restoring the historic marquee to its original condition. Construction was completed on time and under budget.
